'An Experiment with Silence’

A bright sunny morning greeted Room Number-206 as Abi woke up to a glass of vibrant green liquid placed on his bedside table for his first drink of the day. It was to be his pre-breakfast herbal drink. The color reminded him of the patina settled on the big, well-crafted artistic copper lamp his mother would light every day in the morning at home. He absolutely hated the sight of the slimy layer on the lamps. “Yuck… this… again?” he said, his face showing his displeasure. “C’mon Abi... You should be used to the taste by now” said the nurse, somewhere in her early thirties, as she walked in with a smile. “Do I have to drink this everyday…? Everything should have a cheat day. Even my personal trainer allows me a double cheese paneer sandwich once a week…” protested Abi, sulking. “Uff… tantrums again. You are no better than my six-year-old. You knew the drill when you signed up for this right? After all, this is not your first trip here…” responded the nurse with a tone of mockery escapin...

'Tricklets of Memories'

"No water, no life. Save every drop of water. Join hands one and all. Take up water conservation as a national issue…” was an announcement in the radio at precisely fifteen past eight every day in the morning. As a kid, I had to travel twenty kilometers to school in a rickety school bus daily, that would break down more often than not. The fun time began the moment we started listening and reciting a few common lines of the radio with varying accents to pass time. These lines never made any sense to me at that time as I hail from a place where rivers like Cauvery, Kannika and Sujyothi originates, that later on flows towards the Bay of Bengal, catering to the needs of thousands of farmers on the way. We often made fun of the announcement while playing with water, that would finally incur the wrath of our bus driver.  Recently, a trip to the arid regions of North Karnataka brought back memories of the announcement as well as several struggles with water management I had faced once I...

'A novel perspective'

"Come Saab, let me show you around. After all, you have to be here for a while and should know the place well..." said the man in his late thirties, informally dressed in his normal khaki uniform, as he walked past me reaching for his double barrel Santokhoo 12 bore gun. A bare look and it was anyone's guess that the gun was unused for a very long time. The specs of rust on its barrel yelled for maintenance and the lack of oiling left me wondering if I was safe under the protection of such guns, in a place I knew so little about. "Hurry up Saab, I do not have the whole day. I have to head towards the school also." he said as I shot an intense stare at him reminding him of who was in command. "My daughter is scared to walk home alone in the evening. A herd of elephants was sighted nearby a couple of weeks ago. The people in our haadi do not feel safe anymore. It's all our fate. Nobody cares about us" he grumbled. "Enough of it. Let's leave...

'The truth of Ink'

"Is there any merit?" I asked with force "Else I wouldn't take credit" came a voice tad course Print it with joy, for the news is for sure Said the caller in coy and words so pure I ran my press throughout the night Printing the expose, rest nowhere in sight Come morning, I realised the fact I was a victim, of a well thought tact The news was as false as ocean in the sand I was left with a bumf and a caller in hand "Sorry for that" he said with a shrug "Well from a distance, I felt it was a hug" A lawsuit was soon to follow in line It was meant to be a news just fine With comments and hoardings making me a clown I was left with my secrets and sources to drown Truth be told, I did try To correct or atleast rectify Like a fish caught in a net I was trapped in a maze too well set Then come tomorrow, the stage was new For a storm, freshly created in the dew The winds changed as the phone bells rang With novel news the voices sang Gone were the da...
